"The Sound of Music" Comes to Prescott Park Arts Festival June 22

June 7, 2007

Portsmouth NH - One of the most popular musicals of all time takes center stage during Prescott Park Arts Festival's 33rd summer season of entertainment that begins Friday, June 22 at 8 p.m.

"The Sound of Music" will be performed at the outdoor waterfront park Thursday and Sunday at 7 PM and Friday and Saturday at 8 PM through August 19.

Directed by University of New Hampshire theater professor David Kay, this final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein production tells the story of Maria, a young governess who, amidst the backdrop of World War II and the Nazi invasion of Austria, captures everyone's hearts--including her seven young wards and their widowed naval captain father--with her generosity of spirit and love of music.

PPAF's annual music festivals including Freedom Rocks (June 30), Jazz (July 15), Folk (July 21), and Country (August 4) have been expanded with the addition of Americana (July 7) and Rhythm and Roots (August 11), from noon to 5 p.m.

Three festivals days focused exclusively on the young and young-at-heart featuring children's music, magic shows, jump rope competitions, stilt walkers, and puppets will take place on June 23, July 28, and August 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each of these days has a dance performance - including tap, lyrical, ballet, jazz, and modern - beginning at 3 p.m.

The PPAF season also offers a Wednesday evening concert at 7 p.m. throughout the season where pops, big band, blues, gospel, Scottish highland, and a Beatle's tribute band take the stage.

A $5 per person donation is suggested for the play, KIDS Fests, and concerts and $8 per person for the music festivals. No one is ever turned away for an inability to pay.

Executive Director Deborah Lielasus Tombleson says, "Like 'raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens' Prescott Park Arts Festival's 33rd season is destined to become one of your favorite things!"
